In 1980, Zahid Tractor became the distributor for Volvo Trucks in Saudi Arabia. With a reputation for reliability and safety, Volvo trucks experienced vast and dynamic growth in the Kingdom, which led to the strategic decision by Zahid Tractor and Volvo Truck Corporation to form Arabian Vehicles and Trucks Industry (AVI) in 1998.
An ergonomically designed plant with state-of-the-art tooling and equipment was built at Zahid’s Kilo 14 Complex on the outskirts of Jeddah for Volvo trucks assembly. AVI’s advanced operation applies the lean manufacturing principles enforced by the Volvo Production System. Volvo-certified product auditors continuously monitor the process, ensuring the trucks are assembled as per the highest quality standards of Volvo. AVI became ISO 9002 certified in 2000 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certified in 2010, a testament to the company’s continued efforts to produce safe and reliable transport solutions.
Throughout the years, AVI has increased its annual production capacity from 600 units in 1999 to close to 3000 units today. To fulfill growing demands, Zahid Tractor and Volvo Trucks have decided to build a 55,000 square meter AVI facility in King Abdullah Economic City, scheduled to open in 2015. Both Volvo and Renault new generation trucks will be produced on the same line, and the facility will be designed to assemble 4,000 units per year in a single shift.
Employing and developing Saudis has always been an important priority for AVI; since inception, local staff was hired, trained and educated in different disciplines of the business. Today, AVI falls under the Platinum category, which shows its commitment to sustained Saudization growth.
